YOUR ITINERARY

WELCOME & INTROS

We’ll kick off the session with some brief introductions, we want to know who you are, what you do and what you’re hoping to get out of today!

PHYSIOTHERAPY TEACHING SECTION (Ryan Tan)

PART 1: The (many) theories on Low Back Pain Rehab - which should YOU follow?

On social media - everyone’s an ‘expert’. ‘Do these 3 exercises to cure back pain’. ‘Don’t round your back’. ‘Jefferson Curls are good for you’.

Who’s right and who’s bonkers?

We’ll briefly go over the polarising theories out there, and share with you our approach.

  • Mechanical models to approach Low Back Pain (McKenzie, McGill, Maitland etc)

  • Biopsychosocial approach (technique doesn’t matter, gradual exposure, CBT)

  • ‘Evidence-Based’ (General exercise eg walking/swimming/cycling for 150min/week)

  • What works best in practice (in our experience)?

PART 2: ANATOMY (will include surface anatomy practice)

Learn fundamental anatomy of the Lumbar spine, giving you the foundation to understand its real-life applications.

  • Skeletal (bone) anatomy of the spine (vertebrae, pelvis)

  • Neural (nerve) anatomy (Spinal cord, nerve roots, plexus etc)

  • Muscles of the Lumbar spine and pelvis

  • Surface Anatomy where we teach you how to locate key landmarks and muscles around the lower back.

PART 3: FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY

Review key principles and theories that you should consider when designing a bespoke training program.

  • What structures are loaded during different ranges of movement? (Discs, Facet Joints, Ligaments etc).

  • How can we classify different ‘types’ of lower back pain? (Flexion vs Extension intolerant).

  • What are the common patterns we see in Flexion/Extension intolerant clientele?

  • How does a disc bulge? How does a Facet joint ‘degenerate’? (Pathogenesis of disc bulges & Spondy’s)

  • What other areas of the body should we look at when considering lower back injuries?

PART 4: OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENTS (Physio style assessment techniques)

Learn movement tests that you can replicate quickly and reliably on the gym floor to help guide your decision making process when it comes to program design.

We’ll provide you with a structured framework that will help troubleshoot where the root cause may originate, giving you the confidence to tailor your program appropriately.

  • Lumbar Spine Range of Motion (ROM)

  • Simple ‘core’ stability tests

  • Simple pelvic stability tests

  • QUALITATIVE movement assessment (HOW does someone move, not just how much).

PHYSIOTHERAPY & REHAB PRACTICALS (Ryan Tan & Chris Tang)

PART 5: Injury Management: The Flexion Intolerant Spine (Ouch I can’t bend forwards!!)

Discuss possible reasons why someone may be flexion intolerant, and what rehabilitative exercises to prescribe!

  • What’s happening in this person’s spine that’s stopping them from bending forwards?

  • How long should I expect them to have difficulty for?

  • Sciatica - should they still exercise?

  • Rehabilitative exercises to help flexion intolerance.

PART 6: Injury Management: The Extension Intolerant Spine (Bending backwards hurts!!)

Discuss possible reasons why someone may be extension intolerant, and what rehabilitative exercises to prescribe!

  • What’s happening in this person’s spine that’s stopping them from bending backwards?

  • How long should I expect them to have difficulty for?

  • Sciatica - should they still exercise?

  • Rehabilitative exercises to help extension intolerance.

WHAT YOUR PEERS HAVE TO SAY

At Discite, we’re changing how education is delivered.

Dedicated coaches & physios like you deserve quality education that matches your calibre, setting you apart from the rest.

Our Immersion program is a series of workshops that dive deep into region specific areas of the body, giving you confidence to excel at what you do best.

Meet the team behind Discite

Ryan (Physiotherapist), and Chris (Rehab Specialist) have been in the health and fitness industry for over a decade.

They noticed a huge gap in the healthcare space where

  1. Trainers lacked the confidence when it came to training clients who had an injury, often resorting to complete rest or avoidance of that body part.

  2. Physio’s and other allied health professionals lacked confidence on the gym floor, meaning their clients were falling short of their full potential.

Passionate to help uplift colleagues in our industry, they created Discite to provide unique education for Personal Trainers, Coaches, and Health Professionals that aims to deepen their knowledge of human anatomy, building their confidence to bridge the gap between injury and performance.

  • An experienced Physiotherapist, Clinical Mentor and Founder of Physiologic, Ryan knows a thing or two about the body.

Ryan’s expertise lie in blending his Physiotherapy skillset with accelerated rehabilitation protocols, getting his clients in the gym ASAP, achieving goals they once thought impossible.

Personal trainers make up the bulk of his contact list and IG feed, and he loves diving into the theory behind different training methodologies, experimenting them with his own clients.

  • Chris is passionate about rehab and prehab from his own experiences. Having chronic back pain that no one could help with, he realised there was a lack of knowledge in the anatomy. He began his quest to learn/study and actively read as much as he could get his hands on. In the seminar he will be sharing information distilled from over 7 years of rehab experience and over 10 years of PT knowledge.

Unlocking a new layer of knowledge is the key to becoming a stand out coach, and it’s achievable with our immersion program that supports you inside and out of the classroom.

The problem with most upskill courses:

  • Jammed packed with content over your weekend, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

  • Teaches general methods, without consideration into client injuries or restrictions.

  • Single discipline teacher, only giving you ‘one size fits all solutions’

  • Huge course cohort where you’re just filling up a seat, not getting your questions answered.

  • Lack of support after completing the course, leaving you to figure it all out on your own.

  • Anatomy taught by our Physiotherapist to deepen your knowledge of the body.

  • Learn some common Physio assessment techniques & clinical reasoning to help problem solve and guide program design.
